about astrologer brittany binowski

I became an astrologer in 2017. Before that, I spent years as a journalist in New York City and Salt Lake City, where I worked for popular media organizations such as Forbes.com, The Huffington Post, and CNN, as well as local papers. It was that experience (combined with my studies in graduate school at New York University) that made me realize many important topics in the world were not being explained clearly enough — mostly because the information was focused too much on the details. As a result, I decided to do what I could to improve the understanding of my personal passion — astrology — by creating an outlet where I focus on the big picture.

Hi — I'm Brittany! I bring my expertise as a journalist in communicating complex subject matters in simple ways to my personal passion — astrology.

I'm a Gemini 👯 sun and moon
with a cancer 🦀 rising.

the Astrologer

I had no dark night of the soul or big spiritual awakening. I have always been curious about spiritual matters and the hidden reason behind things   since I was young, and felt like my life was guided 🧚 by a higher power.

I was often bullied as a young child because of my different perspective. Kids my age either didn't understand deep spiritual principles, didn't care, or felt threatened by it — leaving me feeling alone with no one to trust. In addition to that, I also struggled to assert my ideas or interests in spirituality. When kids would question or bully me, I often wondered if maybe they were right about me — and if I was the wrong one. Many times I would sacrifice my beliefs or interests just to see the other side, be liked, or fit in. That lead me to create certain experiences in life that many times felt inauthentic.

I gravitated to ✨ astrology, which was a natural fit for my interests, during a difficult time in my life when I was feeling alone, misunderstood, and trapped in order to give me comfort and words to better understand my experience. I also gravitated to ✏️  journalism at the same time to help me better understand how to research, report, and communicate deep or hard-to-understand things with others, which was crucial to my journey.

While I was getting my master’s degree in journalism, I learned some unexpected things about the industry that changed the way I fundamentally think and communicate about the world, including spirituality. One thing I learned is that sometimes a journalist forming an opinion based on research and asserting that opinion — is the most fair and balanced thing a journalist can do, when all the facts lead that way. I also learned that context is what is missing from most news articles today, causing many people to not fully understand the world they live in, and be swayed by misinformation or false wisdom.

It was both that experience in journalism, combined with my knowledge of astrology, that served as the medicine 🌿 I needed to help me solve some of my life’s biggest challenges. Those things helped me to be more confident in myself and my natural interests, assert myself more strongly, and communicate better. They also helped me to form astrological interpretations with more detail, context, and a strong message — something I also felt was missing from astrology.

It is the same thing I hope to share with you. In all my offerings, I infuse my wisdom from astrology with journalism and storytelling techniques like point of view and context.

But what I have struggled with is my ability to communicate about spiritual things and feel understood.

My Gemini Sun, Mercury, Venus and Chiron are all in the 12th House. I also have a Mars in Pisces, which all contribute to my natural interest in spirituality.

I wanted to be a writer

My dream when I was younger was to write philosophy and poetry books for a living. I also wanted to be a speech writer behind the scenes for politicians.

english is a passion

I almost majored in English during college because I love reading and writing. I didn't, however, because I thought journalism was more practical & would be easier to apply.

I almost didn't get in to nyu

I was put on the waitlist for my master's degree in journalism at New York University. I only got in because I called the school before enrollment ended and pleaded with them to accept me!

Gemini & Sagittarius

I have planets in both Gemini and Sagittarius. Gemini is about learning objectively through facts. Sagittarius is about learning subjectively through experience. I combine both in my practice.

things i learned from j-school that changed my life

I lived most of my life thinking that journalism must always be fair, balanced, and impartial in order to be valuable. But what I learned when getting my master's degree in journalism from New York University is actually the opposite. My professor Jay Rosen, director of the program and renowned media critic, taught me that every single person alive has their own point of view shaped by their own preferences and past experiences. He taught me that while we can — and should — try to step back from that point of view to see things objectively, that we can never truly leave those preferences behind.

1.

Everyone has a
point of view.

Because humans have personal preferences that they can never truly release, no matter how hard they try, my journalism professor believed that journalists should strive more towards transparency in their work instead of complete objectivity. He believed that when journalists are transparent about where they come from, where they stand, and why that it allows people to decide for themselves if the journalist is biased. It also fosters more trust in the journalist. That is because the journalist isn't pretending to be completely objective — something that is not truly possible — and is able to be seen as more human.

2.

Transparency over objectivity.

In journalism school, I also learned that sometimes being fair or impartial distorts reporting, making it further from the truth (especially in an atmosphere in which many political candidates are spreading blatant lies). For example, it is unfair to say that a politician is not cheating or stealing (or give space to people who are saying that) when all the facts point the other way. Sometimes the most accurate thing a journalist can do, is express a clear point of view when all the evidence leads that way. Watering down the message to be impartial — or worse, saying you are impartial when you aren't — erodes trust

3.

Sometimes opinions
are good.

I also learned in j-school that many journalists do not include the necessary back story, or context, in their articles in order to make the event they are describing understandable. They just simply write updates to a story, assuming a person has been following along the whole time. That makes it hard for people to get a complete understanding of the news event and know how to handle it effectively. It also makes it hard for new readers to learn about the story and follow along. As a result, I learned more journalists should include context to current stories regularly in order to catch people up and make sure understanding is complete.

4.

Context changes everything.

Started to study astrology

2012

Working in journalism

I graduated journalism school with my master's degree and begin to work in the journalism industry in New York City. I work at CNN, Forbes, The Huffington Post, and a journalism startup. I start to feel unfulfilled in journalism. Some of these organizations don't like my unique ideas I learned about journalism (such as point of view and context), and don't give me autonomy to work on unique projects.

I made a big move from New York City to Salt Lake City for a promotion into a leadership position at a local paper that had been recognized for its unique approach to journalism. The local paper was owned by the Church of Latter Day Saints. I assumed it would be more accepting of "point of view" journalism. I had also been interested in the Mormon Church.

Unsatisifed in journalism

I was living and working in Salt Lake City. I loved the city and my co-workers. However, the innovative leader at the head of the paper left for another job. As a result, the remaining leadership began to disagree about the direction of the company, and revert back to old-school techniques. I began to think journalism was not for me, and that I needed to look for a new career in a new field.

2018

Started Wonder Girl

I realized that I knew a lot about astrology from studying it the past eight years. (I also did not know what other career I could do that was a good fit for my skills.) As a result, I started my astrology business, under a different name — Wonder Girl Astrology. I started out doing weekly sun sign horoscopes for all 12 signs, and collective weekly horoscopes on YouTube

2021

Feeling off about work

I was getting success with the work I was doing with Wonder Girl, and believed astrology was a good fit for me. However,  something with my business started to feel off. I felt as though my routine filming videos and giving consultation was becoming overwhelming, with no room for rest. I also felt as though II had no real structure to my business, or to my interpretations, that I could replicate or share with others.

2023

Changed name to Ethereal

I was in full burnout mode, and stopped doing a large number of my horoscopes and readings. I also started to formulate a more clear system or approach for how I do astrology — which was based more on cycles, the nodes, outer-planets, and context (and included my experience from journalism). I changed my business name to Ethereal Astrology to mark a new chapter in business that was more refined and mature.

2016

Promoted in journalism

I was getting my bachelor's degree in journalism from the University of Georgia. During that time, I struggled to make a group of friends I felt close to. In addition, the relationship with my first love, who I met my first year in college, was on the rocks. My dad also died unexpectedly from unknown health conditions.. I was feeling lost and looking for more answers.

2014

I got accepted into graduate school at New York University. I moved across the country to New York City to attend. I learned a lot of unique things about journalism I didn't intend to learn — like it's OK for journalists to have opinions and context matters. I also started studying astrology, which was a natural fit for my interests, around this time to help me better make sense of my life and what I was experiencing.
